A very good depiction of the universal human plight. How the soul hankers for something unknown, is similar to Freud’s belief in the death principle — that we wish to return to the place from where we came.
I think we can see this need to reunite ourselves with a deeper self as a sort of proof that the unconscious is our real, deeper self. It’s probably a good thing that it stays unconscious, untainted by the trivial complicated issues of mundane life.
The sliver of consciousness that we possess has an innate knowledge that creates this need to know about something hidden. There must be something, somewhere that holds the answer. And as you say, we look into the unknowable future hoping that if we can find the right path, it will lead to the quenching of our hankerings. This in turn, leads to self deception and disappointment.
