A Pinch of Magic: How Spices Stir the Soul in Storytelling
Have you ever picked up an historical object, admired its beauty, and realised that somewhere deep within its structure there is a story?
Every short story relies on deep emotion to create its rhythm that will carry a reader to the end.
Character and conflict, and deep layers of past experiences that rise to the surface like a binding residue.
Writing short stories is hard. It takes time to make those connections that bring it to life.
Character conflicts, historical ideas and objects, all make for great combinations to explore, then creatively connect to make your character come alive.
I think many beginner writers assume a short story is easy. A walk through a pretty park on a sunny day. They end up with a sketch of an idea, or even a short ditty about an event. But really, if it’s worth writing, then it’s worth digging deep into character and background.
I spend a lot of time building my character. I make notes, look deeply into their soul, and find what really irks them.
If I know why a character finds themself in a conflicting situation, then I know how they will act to get out of it.
